Trent Rowing Club has celebrated a remarkable milestone, recognising two of its longest-serving members, Richard Gipson and John Oram, who have each reached an incredible 50 years of membership.
Together, that's a century of loyalty, dedication and contribution to the Club, and certainly something worth celebrating!
The occasion was marked during the naming ceremony of the new President's Boathouse in October, where Richard and John were each presented with a commemorative trophy in recognition of their outstanding service and commitment to Trent Rowing Club.
Two Members Who Helped Shape Trent's History
Richard and John are much more than familiar faces around the boathouse. Over the past five decades, both have played important roles in the Club's history, helping to guide Trent through periods of success, change and challenge.
Richard became Club Secretary in 1982 before taking on the role of Chairman, a position he held for many years alongside the late John Hayward, who became Club President in 1989.
In 2025, Richard became Club President himself, continuing a remarkable record of service to Trent Rowing Club.
John Oram has also made a significant contribution to the Club, serving as Chairman and helping to develop some of Trent's talented young rowers through coaching.
One of his notable achievements was coaching Peter Spiby and Terry Roe, who went on to become the first Trent members to represent England at the Home International in 1980.
Over the years, Richard and John have been part of the dedicated group of members who have helped keep Trent Rowing Club moving forward, even during challenging times. Their hard work and commitment have helped secure the Club's future, ensuring that generations of rowers can continue to enjoy the sport on the River Trent.
A Lasting Legacy for Future Generations
To make this milestone even more special, Richard and John will each have a trophy presented in their name at the Club's annual awards event.
These awards will celebrate the achievements of today's members and future generations, creating a lasting connection between Trent's proud history and its future. It's a fitting tribute to two individuals who have given so much of their time, energy and enthusiasm to the Club.
As one of Burton upon Trent's oldest sporting clubs, Trent Rowing Club has always been built on the dedication of its members and volunteers. Richard and John are wonderful examples of the commitment, friendship and community spirit that make Trent such a special place.
From everyone at Trent Rowing Club, congratulations and a huge thank you to Richard and John.
Here's to 100 years of combined membership, countless memories and many more years at Trent!
