Leicester Regatta - 22 April 2007

Leicester Regatta was the hunting ground for Trent Rowing Club’s new junior squad at the weekend. For most the 700metre event on Leicester’s Grand Canal was their first foray into competition since joining the club.

Matthew Pountney took to the water in Mens Junior 15 Sculls. Facing a local sculler Pountney performed well but was unable to progress to the final of the event.

Pountney teamed up with Matt Purdy to compete in Mens Junior 15Double Sculls. A good start saw them push ahead of their opposition from Loughborough Boat Club. Despite a minor necessary course correction they continued this over the remainder of the course to earn them a place in the final. Here they missed out on the event to a crew from Burton Leander.

Matt Purdy returned to the water in Mens Junior 14 Sculls. Strong off the start Purdy never looked like losing the semi-final against Merchant Taylors School Boat Club. Winning easily he faced another sculler from ‘Merchants’ in the final. Once again proving himself worthy he won the race and his first ever event in comfortable style.

Another competition debutant was Holly Davies in Womens Junior 14 Sculls. Holly looked strong off the start but was unable to match the experience of her opposition from Leicester Rowing Club.

Also competing, representing the senior squad, was Kenny Holmes in Mens Senior 3 Sculls. Beating the Leicester Sculler Holmes looked set for the final. A gutsy drive saw his opposition push past and take race.

Other competitive action over the weekend was at the Junior Inter-Regional Championships. Being called up to compete once again was Gemma Barker. Progressing to the Petit Final after her semi final Barker finished 9th overall earning the East Midlands Region 8points.
