Boat Naming - 16 December 2006

Trent Rowing Club celebrated the naming of three boats on Sunday following a competition draw run through the Burton Mail in the summer. The boats were unveiled then christened with Champagne.

The first to be named was the lightweight Sims quadruple scull. The boat, which Trent’s developing Junior Squad will be using in next years regatta Season, was christened by Liam Hastelow and Simon Clarke, two of the clubs junior members. The name ‘Furniture Monkey’ was assigned the boat by friend of the club, Dan Johnson.

The second of the two boats that could be named via the competition was a Single Sculling boat. This now bears the name ‘Sg Mj Brummy’ after being unveiled by Nick Edge and christened by Wendy Edge. Competition winner Bob Edge, who chose to name the boat after his father, said “It’s a fantastic honour knowing that the boat will bear my chosen name for life”.

The third boat named on Sunday was another Single Scull. The Trent Rowing Club committee decided to name the boat ‘John F Ash’. This was to give thanks to all the hard work that clubs Junior Coordinator John Ash has put in over the years and continues to do so. The boats name was unveiled by John’s mother, Helen Ash and Christened by his wife Ann.

Trent Rowing Club has also recently been given the title of Community Amateur Sports Club. The CASC accreditation recognises the clubs activities within the Community. This would include the work being done with Abbot Beyne High School in Winshill. The link offers youngsters the chance to try both indoor and eventually real rowing on the River Trent.

Other big news includes the purchase of the land where Trent Rowing Club is built. This acquisition is a huge step forward in the clubs planned developments. This is the first time Trent has owned itself in its 143 year history.
