This months report is short and sweet, but it makes good reading in the main! Since the last meeting the Club has acquired a new coxed 4 that can be converted to a coxed quad. It comes equipped with both sets of riggers plus a spare set of new shoes. This boat should go a long way to raise the standard of our sweep oar equipment, hopefully bringing many wins along the way. Members of the Club must be aware that some fund raising is required to help pay for the new boat. Thanks must go to John Ash and Rob Gipson for arranging the purchase of the Wintech 4. We have an 8 on the racks , borrowed from Derby, unfortunately we had an accident on the water. No one was injured, but the bow section has been taken to Ray Sims for repair. It should be back in action before Burton Regatta.
Loughborough Regatta saw some good competition including the debut of the J14 coxed quad consisting of Jake Wheeler, Ben Eames, Simon Clarke, Callum Campbell, coxed by Adam Booth. They sculled very well but were out classed by a crew from Newark Boat Club.
Rob Arnold found some tough opposition at Marlow Regatta, he raced on both days , with the high light being fourth place in the final of Mens under 23, he gained very valuable experience being up against the best scullers in the country.
Ironbridge Regatta resulted in three wins for the Club. Congratulations to Dan Cave and Nick Edge winning Senior 2 double sculls both days, and to the J14 quad that debuted at Loughborough for a win on Saturday and a narrow defeat in Sundays final. This should be the first of many wins for these Abbot Beyne School youngsters. Dave Rodgers made his competition debut at Ironbridge sculling with Chris Mills in the novice doubles event, it should not be long before they have a win under their belts. Thanks to John and Richard for towing to these events.
There was a barbecue on June 21st, it did not feel like the middle of summer, the poor weather kept many people away, but those who did attend enjoyed good food and jovial company, Shaun purchased the food, Richard and Jenny cooked it to perfection !!
Finally, I have sent letters to members who have not yet brought in any sponsorship money from the Ergothon. Monies were coming in quickly, but this has become a slow trickle. Unfortunately I think there will be very little more to come, we must try harder with fund raising if we are to achieve our goals.
P.S I lied about the short sweet report!
