Committee meeting held 10th May 2010
A short month this month with only 3 weeks between reports
On April 25th juniors from the club travelled to Nottingham as part of the East Midlands Inter-Regional team. Antonia Matthews and Eloise McMahon entered WJ14.2x. The girls made it to the final and placed 4th despite being a year younger than the rest of the competitors.
Ben Eames & Chris Williams of BLRC entered J16.2x and claimed a silver medal, only narrowly missing out on the gold. Ben also raced in J16.1x, proving he has what it takes by comfortably taking the gold.
Recently the club travelled to Evesham Regatta on Sat 1st May and unusually failed to win any events on Saturday’s event. Things turned even worse when Sunday’s event was cancelled before it even started due to heavy rain the evening before.
The same weekend Ben Eames teamed up with Chris Williams from Burton Leander to race at Wallingford Regatta held on Sun 2nd May. The Pair won J16.2x convincingly in a very competitive event.
Robert Gipson and I held a coaching course on Sat 1st & Sun 2nd May for the members of Leicester University Rowing club. We coached 12 members of the men’s squad on Saturday and were joined by 8 members of the women’s squad on Sunday. Many of these athletes experienced sculling for the first time and left with sufficient skill to form sculling crews of their own as well as developing their sweep oar skill. All participants enjoyed the weekend and are looking forward to the opportunity to return in the future. The club has received a donation for the use of facilities.
I am told that Guitar Hero Night went well, despite illness forcing my absence. Rob also tells me the evening also helped demonstrate the quality of his singing voice. Thanks for all those who helped organise this event. I hope that the next social can be better attended and I will make more of an effort to publicise it in advance. The next social is scheduled to be the Summer Barbecue on 19th June. I would appreciate help to publicise this event and volunteers to set up etc.
